The Halloween Pennant has orange-yellow wings with dark brown bands that inspired it’s name. The colors look very similar to common butterflies but the Halloween Pennant is a dragonfly. This dragonfly species occurs in eastern United States. In the southern part of its range it is in season all year round. It lives in wet habitat types such as ponds, marshes and lakes, where it perches on vegetation waiting to feed on other smaller insects. The female lays eggs in the morning on open water with the male still attached at the head. This method is known as exophytic egg laying.
